And in Cale's defense, he did get stuck with probably the second- or third-hardest nation to play on his first go, so hopefully this won't be too demoralizing for future games.

Luck... or design? Offering a no-contest bargaining chip can do wonders for one's powers of persuasion. It is called 'Diplomacy' after all, and too many people try and play it like Risk. Trade-and-barter and all that.
